CHAPTER 24

8:46 AM

“How would I know that?” Petruso said, slouched on the stool behind the hotel check-in counter, smoking a cigarette.

Gunnarsen and Solvey faced him from the guest side.

Gunnarsen answered Petruso’s question to his question. “I just thought perhaps you and your uncle might have discussed it?”

“We have not. But you better find out.”

“I agree,” Gunnarsen said. “That is why I was hoping you could drive into Nădejde and call him. I assume he has sources within the Moldovan National Police who could confirm it?”

“Of course, he does. But I cannot do what you ask.”

Gunnarsen presented a respectful face and spoke in a respectful tone. “I am asking you with all respect.”

“I cannot because my uncle never talks on the phone with anyone other than Kostyantyn.”

“Then you could call Mr. Kostyantyn and ask him to call your uncle.”

Petruso exhaled smoke, annoyed. “If I drive into Nădejde and call Kostyantyn and tell him I have questions for him to ask my uncle, Kostyantyn will tell me not to ask them over the phone. He will tell me to come to Chișinău and meet with him. And when I get to Chișinău and tell him these questions you have for him to ask my uncle, he will not call my uncle and ask him these questions. He will say that you should have asked for a meeting to come to Chișinău to give him these questions for him to ask my uncle since they are your questions, and this is your job.”

Gunnarsen paused a moment and spoke in an even more respectful tone. “Considering the circumstances here that I explained to you, do you think Mr. Kostyantyn might agree to a less…intricate line of communication to your uncle?”

Petruso exhaled smoke, annoyed, again. “In my family, we do things the way we do things. And we have been very successful doing them the way we do for over 100 years. No thanks to foreigners who always think they have a better way of doing things, like you.”

Gunnarsen smiled. “Your point is well taken. I will go to Nădejde and call Mr. Kostyantyn myself. Thank you.” He exited the hotel lobby, followed by Solvey.

Solvey grimaced. “It turns my stomach to see you grovel to a pompous, inferior…imbecile like him.”

“What do you think it does to my stomach?” Gunnarsen checked his watch. “I’ll be gone at least six hours. Probably longer. However, letting the castle dwellers sweat it out for that long might work to our advantage. And during that time, make it a priority with the men to find the Frenchman if he’s hiding somewhere around here. And I’ll watch for him on the road to Nădejde and dispose of him if he’s trying to walk out.”

“Yes, commander.”

“And find that nightwatchman too. Old drunken grandfather as he may be, I don’t like him wandering around free either.”

“Yes, commander.”

“And in the extremely rare circumstance the police do conduct a rescue operation, get out of here the same way we did in Sana’a. Then get to Nădejde any way you can, and I’ll come find you.
